good evening, everyone.
my name is wanghaili. i am an outgoing girl who likes reading and traveling. it’s really my great honor to stand here and give everyone a short speech.
people say, youth is fire which is ignited by passion. people say, youth is a chapter of the poem which is written by stories. the color of youth is bright and we make most use of our ardor to draw the scenes to the canvas of painting. but we may be confused and lose our direction in the youth time. under this, youth slips away. roman roland says, life doesn’t issue return ticket and can never come back once sets out. so we should seize the short youth time and try our best to pursue our ideal. do what should we do and let our youth without regret.
when we refer to ideal, we will realize the importance of ideal. ideal is the beacon,. without ideal, we will lose the firm direction. without direction, we will lose our life. according to this, every one of us should establish our own ideal .so that we have the direction of straggle to the future. tolstoy tells us, we should have the life objective from the whole life to the second. so we should cherish every moment and form our systematic objective. youth is the prime time. we have strong body and energy and can sense the meaning of life under the guide of ideal.
as we know, the ideal is plentiful and reality is skinny. but we should believe that we will become stronger and stronger in the way to pursue ideal. future is unknown,. if we hope our future is nice, we should enrich our youth time and find the direction of future.
there are many people who think that wealth is better than health. i used to think so until one day i read a story about howard hughes. he was an american billionaire who got anything he wanted. however, in the last twenty years of his life, his health began to deteriorate and he was miserable. he had the best doctors and nurses. however, he could still find no relief. i realized that health is worth all the money in the world. if you have millions of dollars but your health is poor, you will not be able to do what you want to do. so i would like to say don’t hurt yourself trying to make money. instead take care of your body and be happy with what you do have. health is more important.
which is more important, health or wealth? it is a hot topic among people. i can hardly answer this question. i didn’t realize that health is more imporant until i saw a businessman’s real life.
a successful businessman, one of my father’s friends, devoted himseff to his business. he works from morning to night every day. there is no weekends in his mind. he often says, "i must earn much money so that i can get what i want. "lately, he is ill. though he has a lot of money, he can do nothing but lie in the hospital’s bed.
so i think health is more important than wealth
food safety
a miracle - we are still alive
over the past couple of years, several cases of the food scandal have been disclosed on various media. the problem of food security has become a hot button across society. the prevalence of food insecurity has greatly impacted public health, which the government could not afford to ignore.
leather milk, substandard milk powder, illegal cooking oil exposed in recent years. it’s greatly influence our live.
there are a couple of driving forces, i would argue, behind this undesirable tide. first, in the course of the rapid economic evolution, we ignore moral education, giving rise to the rising rate of the problem. more importantly, the lack of adequate regulation and punishment on those illegal producers enforces the trend.
in fact, the poisonous food associated with japan. in china, a variety of pesticides, antibiotics, antibiotics are from japan. in a manner of speaking, the problem of chinese food should be attributed to japan.
in 1990s, japanese companies were optimistic about china's cheap labor and the huge market potential. and then the japanese companies have entered china with the tide of reform and opening up. in 1980s, japan began to surge in china's pesticide export. in 1984, export volume had reached 26.5 billion yen. it’s irresponsible that japanese companies take pesticides and antibiotics to china. in addition, japan did not give a detailed description of the pesticides.
our country also make a list of healthy food additives and some law about it. however, many food manufacturers do not obey it and use lots of illegal food additives .these food additives are harmful to our body .for example, sanlu milk powder is added in illegal chemicals. if babies eat it, they will get gallstone disease. another hot button is illegal cooking oil. many restaurants use the illegal cooking oil to reduce the cost so they can get more profits .however, the illegal cooking oil contains a large of chemicals that will cause cancer .so it is very terrible.
i observe that profits drive many food producers to commit illegal things. they aim to gain more money at the expense of consumers’ health. second, the overuse of agricultural pesticide has resulted in the degradation of food quality. the excessive pesticide bears enormous health hazard for people. furthermore, some food producers inject hormones into domestic animals so as to make them grow more quickly and thus they can turn in more profit. as a result, people’s health has been seriously disturbed. though many other countries, even countries like the u.s. and japan, have also experienced food safety crises in some periods of their development, maybe none of them has witnessed food safety problems on such a large scale and during such a long period of time. actually, problematic food products had been with us for quite a long time before we realized them and almost no single food or even drink can be claimed absolutely safe. flours may contain too much chemicals like brightener that can turn them into the desirable color; meat might have been produced by animals that have consumed chemicals to add to the red part of meat; vegetables may have too much remnants of pesticides on their leaves; even milk and other beverages may have in them poisonous chemicals to make them smell flagrant and tasty.
there is no denying the fact that food safety is a grave problem with which this country is confronted. a joke goes that everyone who can survive in china canm survive in any other part of the world, which means that the test one faces in china in terms of food safety is the gravest in the world. the most notable instance might be the notorious san lu milk powder scandal which has drawn considerable publicity in the past months. causing kidney stones among thousands of infants and deaths of some of them, the milk powder containing overdose melamine is but one example of numerous substandard food products in this country. while blaming those wrongdoers and sympathizing those victims, we must examine the fundamental causes of the problem and work out effective solutions.
why are substandard food products so rampant in china? poor supervision and law enforcement might be the leading reason. actually, we do have such departments as the bureau of food safety supervision and administration and the bureau of industry and commerce in various levels of the government, but are they really functioning or fulfilling their duties? the answer is most possibly no. we do not have to go to factories or markets to check their performance.
we only need to go and have a look at those restaurants to know that those bureaus are not working. i believe that every one of us has noticed that tableware is not properly sanitized in some restaurants but no one says or does anything about that phenomenon.
truly, some will condemn those manufacturers as immoral and profit-hunting, but it is nothing to blame for an enterprise to go after returns within the limit of law and almost all companies will take the risk if the cost of producing substandard food is as low as it used to be.
we needn’t go far to see the disastrous consequences of the food safety crisis. not only are people’s health and lives directly threatened, but tremendous amounts of resources are wasted. the thousands of tons of milk powder burned to ashes is a case in point. furthermore, an atmosphere of dishonesty and disbelief will permeate the entire society, which will not only hinder the development of economy but will ruin the nation spiritually.
therefore, it is high time that pertinent laws and regulations were worked out and rigidly enforced to crack down on any production and circulation of substandard food products. meanwhile, inactive and incompetent civil servants should be immediately purged from the team of food safety supervision and administration. only with these measures taken can we expect a bright future of this nation.
as is known to all, food is a priority for the mon people. recently, however, reports about food problems have often been seen in the newspapers, showing that people have always been concerned about what they eat every day. the reason for this problem is that some of the food producers are too fond of making money, leading to the result that they use whatever will make the food look good or taste better without considering the bad consequences. this is not normal because people just cannot live without eating anything.
so we should take all the measures necessary to forbid the food producers to make food that is not safe enough. laws should be strengthened and the government should have more control over these producers. only when people are no longer worried about whether their food is safe or not can they enjoy a better life.
for thousands of years, animals have trodden a slow path, their spirits together with the body.but our human being's transportation is too fast.the body moves but the soul is left behind.we try to free ourselves in convenience, but we only imprison the soul.since we invented how to count hours,we do everything to short the time, short the deadline.but the time saved can't be shorten.nowadays,we spend lots of time staying in front of a tv just changing the channels, while we have no time to talk with a good friend or play with our family.we have plenty of time to search old news on the internet, while we hardly think about our life.in the end,the only thing apparent is our loneliness.
take your time, please.try to follow the natural steps and have your own clock.try to share your time with everybody you love, share your mind, your happiness and sadness.try to read the world we live in,do not only catch a quick glimpse at the society.
someday, when we know how to spend every second in our life,we can then live our own life.
most of us are approaching the end of the year with reflections on the past 12 months, along with resolutions and hopes for the future.
in years past, we may have chalked that future up to genetics and a dose of good luck. but research now suggests we have much more of a hand in our destiny than previously believed. in fact, a number of straight-forward nutrition, fitness, sleep and other health tips can help assure you maximize the life in your years.
here are six of those things that we learned in 2012.
1. an advanced age is no excuse to give up on healthy habits!
a 2012 study showed that exercise, eating right and avoiding harmful habits like smoking helped people 5.4 years longer than their less healthy-intentioned peers.
2. exercise really works
there's nothing new about the fact that exercise helps us live longer. but a recent study did take a closer look at just how powerful regular activity really is: the physically active benefit from several years added to their lives. the study found that for every additional hour of exercise (like jogging or swimming) that a black woman gets, she can gain 11 hours of lifespan.
3. laugh more
as part of an ongoing study on genes and aging, researchers found this year that certain personality traits seem to be associated with a longer life, including the propensity to laugh -- a lot!
4. look at the bright side
in the same study on aging, optimism was also linked to living longer. the 243 subjects over the age of 95 "were outgoing, optimistic and easygoing. they considered laughter an important part of life and had a large social network. they expressed emotions openly rather than bottling them up," study researcher dr. nir barzilai, m.d., director of einstein's institute for aging research, said in a statement.
5. supplements can help
adults in their 60s and 70s were 9 percent less likely to die over a three-year period when they took vitamin d supplements with calcium, compared to the elderly who went without either supplement.
a number of other foods and nutrients have also been linked to a longer lifespan, including omega-3s and certain antioxidants.
6. we know what to do -- but we rarely do it all
the most important behaviors for a long and healthy life aren't secrets -- they're things like not smoking, exercising, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels in check. in fact, you may even be tired of hearing about them. but just a little more than 1 percent of american adults actually abide by these guidelines, according to a 2012 study. people who do meet all the criteria? well, they enjoy a 51 percent decreased risk of death from any cause.

dear sir:
well…i am both honored and pleased to be asked to introduce myself to all of you.
my name is ___. i’ll graduate from china medical university in july ne_t year. and, my major is imaging of medicine, which is one of the most famous majors in our university. in my way of thinking, education is an important aspect of my life. i appreciate that our professors put great emphasize on the academic teaching of the solid theory foundation during our four year course. on the other hand, i must admit, practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. through the whole semesters of the fifth year in school for clinic practice, i make great progress in practical application.
at the mention of my qualification, i have passed cet-4 in english and cct-2 (=the second level) on computer already. i have a good command of imaging computer system “pacs”; not only do my qualification make me a perfect candidate, my personality is well suited: i’m honest, stable, aspiring, and have high sense of responsibility, strong will and indomitable spirit .i think i have the e_cellent ability of working independent1y or with a diverse work force as well. apart from the above mentioned, my scholastic pursuit make me spare no effort to get down to everything.
needless to say, nothing but perseverance, diligence can lead me to the way of success. it’s indeed unchangeable truth. it is my eagerness for putting my book knowledge into the farthest application .with my pious enthusiasm and sincerity, i want to join you to work for your hospital.
i believe that, “i can because i think i can.”
thank you for your consideration of my application…thank you.
“once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. to all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. one day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince..." well, you know the rest. the three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.
and the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "and they live happily every after."
why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative? how can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
the story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal's defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. that's why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.
